Hartsbourne Wood - South Oxhey

1.8 hectares of linear secondary woodland providing an important screen between the railway and residential areas in South Oxhey. There is a stream which runs along the length of this strip of woodland which is of significance to the biodiversity of the area.

The wood is dominated by oak, sycamore, lime, hornbeam and Norway maple in the southern part with ash and Corsican pine. The northern end is more open with more ash, lime and field maple with blackthorn in the under-storey. Dead standing wood is providing good habitat for woodpeckers and possibly bats. A stream runs through the wood and is crossed by bridges. 

Deer and rabbits are present in all woods. Roe deer and muntjac deer are locally common and there is evidence of deer browsing of young tree seedlings. Control of deer is not considered to be necessary at this time although browsing of the tree regeneration will require monitoring.
