Water is a precious commodity but we don’t always treat it that way. We are so used to turning on our water taps and seeing water flowing freely. Where does the water come from and how is it replenished? Most of us pay our bills to Veolia Water Central but when you search for where your water comes from, it yields no results. When searching elsewhere it says it comes from reservoirs, boreholes and such and it also mentions surface water. The way we turned our front gardens into parking lots and the materials that we choose for the safe if easy maintenance means that more of the surface water ends up in already struggling drains and causes surface floods.
We might think that we don’t have to worry too much. We have plenty of rain, so some water is bound to end up where it ought to. We might be more wrong about this than we think. The south-east is the driest region as far as rainfall goes, yet it uses the most water per person per day. So rain itself won’t fix it. We have to alter our attitudes and become better at saving as much water as we can. The Environment Agency and the Building Future guide are just a few great resources you can use to help you on your way toward water conservation.
